Welcome to Dr. Smith's practice website

I am happy to announce that I joined the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute, the leader in Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in our region, in June 2018.

I will be at the Rothman offices in Lankenau, suite 456 (next door to my old office) Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and in Limerick on Tuesdays and Wednesdays .
Unfortunately, I am no longer seeing patients in Chester Springs.

To schedule with me at Rothman call 267-339-3500 or 800-321-9999 for either location.

I will still check my voicemail periodically at 484-928-0007, but it will be intermittent. Please do not leave any urgent messages. I can also be reached via text to 484-928-0007, but that is also intermittent and not reliable for any important or urgent problems. If it is urgent, please call the main number at Rothman at 800-321-9999.

For my current patients, I will do my best to try to respond to your questions, but for any appointments or follow up visits, please call the Rothman Institute to schedule to see me there.
Teaming up with Rothman, allows me to provide even better care than I could on my own, as I will be surrounded by a team that includes many of the best orthopedic surgeons in the entire area, as well as other specialists and therapists to be able to provide the most comprehensive care possible for my patients.

BACKGROUND-   Dr. Smith is a Sports Medicine Specialist.  He is board certified and fellowship trained.  He has been practicing on the Main Line since 2007 and in the Philadelphia area since 1999. In July 2012, he opened his own practice in an office he shared with his wife, an Internist, on the grounds at  Lankenau Hospital.  In June 2018, he joined the Rothman Institute to begin the next stage of his career. Now he is part of a large team that can help him treat patients more comprehensively, including partnering with the best orthopedic surgeons in the greater Philadelphia region.

What does Dr. Smith treat?

the short answer: a lot

Sprains, strains, joint injuries, muscle tears, contusions, overuse injuries, tendonitis, bursitis, stress fractures (and other fractures not requiring surgery), arthritis (osteoarthritis or "wear and tear" arthritis), and Sports Related Concussion.

He also treats chronic musculoskeletal injuries that are not healing with typical treatments by offering treatment options sometimes overlooked such as prolotherapy or Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy.  He also frequently sees patients for second opinions or will take patients referred to him by other providers such as physical therapists, athletic trainers, and chiropractors.

Who does Dr. Smith treat?

Most people:

Young kids with injuries from sports, falls, or growing pains

Athletes of all ages: from grade school to high school, college and beyond.  Also scholarship and pro athletes or "Weekend Warriors" well into adulthood, and people that participate in every type of sport or exercise

Just athletes?  No. Whether you like to run 5-95 miles per week, or you only run when chased, Dr. Smith can help you.  If you can bench press a sofa, or rarely leave your sofa, and you have an injury or something that hurts, chances are Dr. Smith can help.

What does Dr. Smith do?

Injections in joints, tendons, bursas or soft tissue

Musculoskeletal Ultrasound and Ultrasound guided injections

Concussion management including ImPACT Testing (Baseline & Post-Injury)

Viscosupplement injections (Hyaluronic Acid) for knee and other joints (Hip, Shoulder, etc)

Alternative treatments such as Prolotherapy and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections

Casting, bracing, splinting

Sports clearance and pre-participation physicals (pre-season sports for PIAA)

Guidance for returning to sports after injury

What doesn't Dr. Smith do?

1. Surgery

Dr. Smith specializes in Non-operative Sports Medicine.  He will try and treat appropriate conditions without surgery but some injuries either require surgery or may do better with surgery.  He does have relationships with many top orthopedic surgeons in the area so he can help get you to the right doctor if surgery is the best option.

2. Physical Therapy

Dr. Smith often utilizes physical therapy to help his patients recover, but he does not provide rehab in his office.  He will often demonstrate and instruct in some exercises to help your recovery that you can do on your own.  His experience and familiarity with many of the area's best physical therapists can help guide you to the best possible location for treatment for your specific issue.

3. Complex Rheumatologic conditions

If you have rheumatoid arthritis (not osteoarthritis or "wear and tear" arthritis), Polymyalgia Rheumatica, fibromyalgia, or other such systemic conditions, then you are better off with a Rheumatologist and not Dr. Smith.  He can refer you to other specialists if needed to treat any conditions he does not manage.
